A UK wellness startup had raised a £400K pre-seed round on the back of a detailed product spec and a paper prototype. The founding team — a psychologist and a business development director — had a waiting list of 8,000 people who'd signed up after a viral LinkedIn post from the founder. They had exactly 14 weeks before their launch commitment to investors became an embarrassing broken promise. They'd spent three months evaluating agencies and freelancers. The pattern was the same everywhere: native iOS and Android development would take 6–8 months and cost £180K+, or they could get a React Native app that 'looked like a React Native app' — which wasn't acceptable for a wellness product where design quality and animation smoothness were core to the user experience value proposition. We proposed a third path: React Native with a production-grade UI layer using Expo's latest renderer, custom animations, and a design system built specifically for the emotional register of a wellness product. We'd run iOS and Android in parallel from day one, not sequentially. And we'd build for a 50,000-user launch load from the start, because the waiting list made low launch traffic unlikely.

We ran a parallel-track build: mobile app and backend API simultaneously from week 1, with a shared design system review at week 4 to lock visual direction before heavy component development began. The App Store submission was prepared from week 10, giving four weeks of review buffer.
